SEEKING THE HEART OF JESUS: A Heart That Forgives - Where was the man and other questions (a blog post for a sermon to be preached at Kenwood Church in Livonia, MI, on August 18, 2019)

"The woman caught in adultery" is the description given to this passage.  What I would like to know is "Where is the man?"  Certainly the accusers actually had a woman who had committed adultery.  In order to have adultery, there must have been a man involved.  Was he a co-conspirator with the accusers?  Was he a known philanderer?  Was he known to one of the accusers?  Was he allowed to slink away while the woman was thrown into the public eye?

What did Jesus write in the dirt?  The sins of the accusers.  The name of the man.  A reminder of where he was in his teaching that morning.  "Forgiven."  "Paid in full."  The name of the woman.  What did he write in the dirt the second time?  The order in which the men would leave.  The wonderful things this woman would do following her encounter with Jesus.

How did she respond to Jesus' mercy?  How did she comply with his charge ("From now on, sin no more.")?  Where did she go?

Did the group of listeners leave with the teachers of the law and the Pharisees?  If they stayed, how did they respond to the drama between Jesus and the woman?

Verse 12 says, "When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, 'I am the light of the world.  Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'"  Was this immediately following the incident with the woman or just the next time Jesus spoke to this group of people?
