SEVEN ASSURANCES THE RESURRECTION GIVES: The Resurrection Assures us of the New Bodies We Can Have Some Day. (A blog post for a sermon to be preached at Kenwood Church in Livonia, MI, on June 2, 2019)

The promise of a new body may not excite everyone, but it excites me.  The last many months we have had a great number of people in hospitals and various rehab facilities.  The reasons differ and the causes have been different, but the fact that our bodies are fragile is a truth that eventually makes us more alike than different.  Growing up in a nursing home, I have watched more people go through physical deterioration and eventual death than I can count.

It gives me peace to know that one day all of this pain, suffering, fear, weakness, disease, anxiety, and sickness will be over.  We will be set free from the devastation of sin, and we will celebrate for eternity with a new body!

"But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body."

INTRODUCTION

1.  The Power of the Resurrection

“I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead.”
‭‭ Philippians‬ ‭3:10-11‬ ‭NIV‬‬

2.  The New Life

“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!””
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭2:20-21‬ ‭NIV‬‬

A.  Christ living in you
B.  A life lived by faith

3.  Everything we need

“His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins. Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
‭‭2 Peter‬ ‭1:3-11‬ ‭NIV‬‬

4.  We have been set free from sin.

“What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin— because anyone who has died has been set free from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace. What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? By no means! Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness. I am using an example from everyday life because of your human limitations. Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness. When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭6:1-23‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Get rid of the sin you struggle with.

CONCLUSION

We have the necessary power to live as God requires.

Why don't we?
1.  We don't know the power of the resurrection.
2.  We don't live by faith.
3.  We don't have the added goodness; knowledge; self-control; perseverance; godliness; mutual affection; and love.
4.  We don't live as free people, but we live as slaves.

Whatever the reason we need to let go of what holds us back.

SEVEN ASSURANCES THE RESURRECTION GIVES: The Power to Live a New Life

There are moments when I feel like I can't do what God expects.  I feel like I don't have the power to live my new life.  This sermon is the centerpiece of this series.  You and I can live out the power of the resurrection on a daily basis.

"His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ."             2 Peter 1:3‭-‬11 NIV

SEVEN ASSURANCES THE RESURRECTION GIVES: The Resurrection of Christ Assures Us of the Necessary Power to Live as God Requires (a blogpost for a sermon to be preached at Kenwood Church in Livonia, MI, on May 26, 2019)

It has been almost 2 years since I shut down this blog, but it is now up and running again.

I will take you through the journey that is my final preparation for my Sunday morning sermon at Kenwood Church.  I will give you some Bible verses to think about, some thoughts to ponder, and occasionally ask a question or two.  I will also post my sermon notes the beginning of the next week so you can catch up if you were not able to worship with us on Sunday morning.

To catch up, I have been preaching a sermon series developed from the thoughts of Rev. Mark H. Creech.  The series looks at the assurances that we have because of Jesus' resurrection.  We have already looked at

1.  The resurrection of Christ assures us God has accepted Christ's sacrifice for our sins.  (4/28/19)
2.  The resurrection of Christ assures us that there is life after death.  (5/5/19)
3.  The resurrection of Christ assures us that Christ is with us in the present.  (5/12/19)
4.  The resurrection of Christ assures us that we have an advocate in heaven.  (5/19/19)

This brings us to the message for May 26, 2019, The resurrection of Christ assures us of the necessary power to live as God requires.  I will be looking at several Bible passages that demonstrate how our new life in Christ assures us that we can live as God requires.  These are a couple examples.

"I want to know Christ-yes, to know the power of the resurrection."  Philippians 3:10a NIV

"I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.  The life I now live in the body I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me."  Galatians 2:20 NIV

Email me if you would like outlines for the previous messages and please leave comments at the bottom of the blog.

See you Sunday!
