WEIRD: a spontaneous giving challenge

In my August 10 message, I challenged our church family to share, through this blog, the opportunities they have this week to be generous through spontaneous giving.  I hope these stories encourage you to see the opportunities around you.

Last night Thomas came home after being gone 3 days and said we had no food in the house. Now his idea of "no food" is we didn't have chips, pop or cookies :) . So I went to the grocery store with a junk food list. After I filled my cart, I proceeded to the check out line. I got behind a 20 something young man. He had half his groceries scanned already and another half on the belt and a few more in his cart. He and the cashier were going through the rest of the items one by one to see what they cost and to see if he had enough money for each item. He put back a "huge" bag of apples because they put him over his amount of money. I told the cashier and the young man that I would pay for the rest of his groceries (amongst them apples, cheese, sub buns and sunflower seeds). He was very appreciative.

"My friend Vera was in the line at a grocery store and noticed the person in front of her had to take a few items off of her bill because she did not have enough money. Vera offered to pay for the items, but the lady graciously declined. As the lady walked away, she turned to Vera and said, "No one has ever offered to do that for me. Thank you."
