Normal Christianity in America has no attraction to me.
I have always thought a little bit differently than other people. In Bible college and seminary, I was often the one asking the questions that others knew better to ask. I like the fringes of thought. I like wandering in the places where others only like to peak into. I need clarity, not intellectual fodder. I need to be challenged, not assuaged. I need honesty, not convincing. I need more God, not more pablum.
Normal Christianity is about being tepid. Standard Christianity has more to do with image than imago. Average Christianity suffers from a spiritual bell-curve that leaves most outside the realm of convictional Christianity (a Christian belief that drives people to act upon their convictions). Normal Christianity does not exist because their is nothing "normal" about forsaking the world and falling head over heels for Jesus.
This week we talk about the real challenge. The issue we face cannot be broken down into defying normal patterns of dealing with money, time, relationships, sex, and values. The real challenge is to see that Christianity defies the norms of this world. To be Christian is to be weird in the eyes of the world.
Standing in the middle of the road will only get you hit by traffic coming from both ways.
