WHERE ARE THE OTHER NINE?: An Attitude of Ingratitude - October 25, 2026
INTRODUCTION
Gratitude?
Physical Therapy
Head, heart and hands
I know I am cancer free.
I am grateful.
I am working on living a more grateful life.
Luke 17:11-19 NIV
“Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!” When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed. One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan. Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.””
Luke 17:11-19 NIV

HEAD
1. Ingratitude
Ingratitude denotes spiritual immaturity. Infants do not always appreciate what parents do for them. They have short memories. Their concern is not what you did for me yesterday, but what are you doing for me today. The past is meaningless and so is the future. They live for the present. Those who are mature are deeply appreciative of those who labored in the past. They recognize those who labor during the present and provide for those who will be laboring in the future.
Paul Fritz, “Homemade”, Sermon Central, December 1984.
a. Were not all cleansed? Blessed
b. Where are the other nine?
c. Has no one returned to give praise to God?
2. They went about life like nothing had changed.
2 Timothy 3:1-5 NIV
“But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.”
2 Timothy 3:1-5 NIV
3. Sometimes the biggest mistakes of life are what we don't do.
HEART
1. Obedient
2. Healed
3. Ungrateful
Romans 1:21 NIV
“For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.”
Romans 1:21 NIV
“If the heart is devoted to the mirage of the world, to the creature instead of the Creator, the disciple is lost. However urgently Jesus may call us, His call fails to find access to our hearts. Our hearts are closed, because they have already been given to another.”
Dietrich Bonhoeffer
HANDS
1 Thessalonians 5:18 NIV
“give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
1 Thessalonians 5:18 NIV
Take this week and write a note of thanks to someone you know to be ungrateful. You are not to shame, mention why, or make a point. Just be grateful.
Fight ingratitude with gratitude!
CONCLUSION
Do not miss what is happening to you. Do not allow your heart to miss the opportunity to give praise. Do not live an ungrateful life.
INVITATION
It is our custom to offer an "invitation" following the preaching of the Word. You may want to follow Jesus. You may want to proclaim your faith. You may want to repent (stop doing ungodly things and start doing Godly things). Perhaps you want to be baptized for the forgiveness of your sins and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Possibly, if you have already responded to God’s call in these ways, you would like to become a member of Kenwood Church. If you have been moved by the Holy Spirit to make a decision in your life, you can come forward now. If you would like, I would be honored to speak with you following the service about what God is doing in your life.
