GOD USES LITTLE THINGS: NOTHING TO OFFER 10-20-24

GOD USES LITTLE THINGS:  NOTHING TO OFFER 10-20-24

INTRODUCTION

Dust, stick, jawbone, 5 stones, handful of flour and some oil, still small voice, a kid’s lunchbox

I.  PROBLEM - We don't believe God can do mighty things through us!

“Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.””

‭‭ 1 Corinthians‬ ‭1‬:‭26‬-‭31‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

A.  What we are

1.  Not wise

2.  Not influential

3.  Not noble

“As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.””

‭‭ Romans‬ ‭3‬:‭10‬-‭12‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

"Trust in yourself and you are doomed to disappointment

Trust in money and you may have it taken from you;

But trust in God, and you are never to be confounded in time or eternity."

D.L. Moody

B.  What God does

1.  Uses foolish to shame the wise

2.  Uses the weak to shame the strong

3.  Uses the lowly and despised and things that are not to nullify the things that are

4.  Uses unimpressive so that no one may boast

5.  We are perfect!

“His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.”

‭‭ 2 Peter‬ ‭1‬:‭3‬-‭4‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

"There’s something about believing God that will cause Him to pass over a million people just to get to you"

Smith Wigglesworth

II.  SOLUTION - We are in Christ

A.  Because of God

I would recommend you either believe God up to the hilt, or else not to believe at all. Believe this book of God, every letter of it, or else reject it. There is no logical standing place between the two. Be satisfied with nothing less than a faith that swims in the deeps of divine revelation; a faith that paddles about the edge of the water is poor faith at best. It is little better than a dry-land faith, and is not good for much.

C. H. Spurgeon

B.  We are in Christ Jesus

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

‭‭ 2 Corinthians‬ ‭5‬:‭17‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

1.  Our wisdom from God

2.  Our righteousness

3.  Our holiness

4.  Our redemption

“For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.”

‭‭ 2 Corinthians‬ ‭4‬:‭6‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

C.  In Christ, we are more than enough!

A preacher friend of mine named Mike told of his conversion to Christ. He told me his family was known throughout the community as the worst examples of humanity. The parents were irresponsible. The kids were troublemakers. They lived like animals, even eating food out of trashcans.

Everyone who saw them thought, "That’s just who they are. That’s all they’ll ever be. They’ll never change."

But Mike did.

There came a point at which he heard the powerful message of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection, and he decided that was what he wanted for his life. He believed in Jesus, repented of his sins, and was buried in the waters of baptism for the forgiveness of his sins. He eventually became a preacher and part of his ministry reached into his family – of whom he baptized several.

Then one day, Mike was at the funeral of his brother-in-law. One of the women who was there (and who had not seen him since his conversion) spoke with him and she said that she was amazed at the change that had taken place in his life. She was surprised at what HE had made of himself.

Mike responded: "Oh I really appreciate your compliment, but I really didn’t change myself. It was Christ IN ME that brought about the changes in my life."

It was Christ in him – the hope of Glory. As Romans 6:11 taught him, Mike counted himself "…dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus."

Jeff Strite, Sermon Central, June 26, 2011.

“And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”

‭‭ 2 Corinthians‬ ‭9‬:‭8‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

III.  SYNOPSIS

A.  God uses small things.

B.  We are nothing.

C.  God gives us everything.

In Christ, we are small things in the hands of a Big God!

Christ Has No Body by Teresa of Avila (1515–1582)

Christ has no body but yours,

No hands, no feet on earth but yours,

Yours are the eyes with which he looks

Compassion on this world,

Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good,

Yours are the hands, with which he blesses all the world.

Yours are the hands, yours are the feet,

Yours are the eyes, you are his body.

Christ has no body now but yours,

No hands, no feet on earth but yours,

Yours are the eyes with which he looks

compassion on this world.

Christ has no body now on earth but yours.

CONCLUSION

We must believe that God can do mighty things through us!  He uses small, insignificant things. We have nothing to offer apart from Him.  We have everything we need for life and godliness!

“But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

‭‭ 2 Corinthians‬ ‭12‬:‭9‬-‭10‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

In a large cathedral in Europe there was a very large, magnificent pipe organ. It was a Saturday afternoon, and the custodian was making one final check the organ loft high in the balcony at the back of the church.

He was startled to hear footsteps echoing up the stairway. He turned to see a man in slightly tattered traveling clothes coming toward him.

"Excuse me, sir," the stranger said, "I have come from quite a distance to see the great organ in this cathedral, and would you mind opening the console so that I might get a closer look at it?" The custodian at first refused, but the stranger seemed so eager and insistent that he finally gave in.

"May I sit on the bench?" That request of the stranger was met with absolute refusal by the cathedral custodian. "What if the organist came in and found you sitting there? I would probably lose my job!" But again the stranger was so persistent that the custodian gave in." But only for a moment," he added.

The custodian noticed that the stranger seemed to be very much at home on the organ bench, so he was not completely surprised when he was asked by the stranger to be allowed to play the organ. "NO! Definitely not!" said the custodian. "No one is allowed to play it except the cathedral organist."

The man’s face fell, and his deep disappointment was obvious. He reminded the custodian how far he had come, and assured him that no damage would be done.

Finally the custodian relented and told the stranger he could play the instrument, but only a few notes and then he would have to leave.

Overjoyed, the stranger pulled out some stops and began to play. Suddenly the cathedral was filled with the most beautiful music the custodian had ever heard in all his years in that place.

In what seemed all too short a time, the dowdy stranger stopped playing and slid off the organ bench and started down the stairway.

"Wait!" cried the custodian. "That was the most beautiful music I have ever heard in the cathedral. Who are you?"

The stranger turned for just a moment as he replied, "Mendelssohn." The man was none other than Felix Mendelssohn, one of the greatest organists and composers of the 19th century!

The custodian was alone now in that great stone edifice, the beautiful organ music still ringing in his ears. "Just think," he said softly, "I almost kept the master from playing his music in my cathedral!"

God has designed this wonderful life. He made it and designed it.

Offer it to Him, and allow Him to play wonderful music through it.

Christian Cheong, Sermon Central, December 26, 2007.

INVITATION

It is our custom to offer an "invitation" following the preaching of the Word.  You may want to follow Jesus.  You may want to proclaim your faith.  You may want to repent (stop doing ungodly things and start doing Godly things).  Perhaps you want to be baptized for the forgiveness of your sins     and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.  Possibly, if you have already responded to God’s call in these ways, you would like to become a member of Kenwood Church.  If you have been moved by the Holy Spirit to make a decision in your life, you can come forward now.  If you would like, I would be honored to speak with you following the service about what God is doing in your life.

GOD USES LITTLE THINGS - A Lunchbox 10-13-24

GOD USES LITTLE THINGS - A Lunchbox 10-13-24

INTRODUCTION

Dust, stick, jawbone, 5 stones, handful of flour and some oil, still small voice

I have noticed that my sermons have been getting longer over the past few Sundays.

A little girl became restless in church as the preacher’s sermon dragged on and on. Finally, she leaned over to her mother and whispered, "Mommy, if we give him the money now, will he let us go?"

God uses little things to make a big difference.

“Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick. Then Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with his disciples. The Jewish Passover Festival was near. When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do. Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!” Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?” Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish. When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten. After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.” Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.”

‭‭ John‬ ‭6:1-15‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

I.  PROBLEM- We lack vision.

A.  We see through our eyes.

1.  Philip saw the cost.

2.  Andrew saw too much need.

B.  The situation

1.  5,000+ men and their families need a meal.

2.  Apostles could not see an answer.

3.  Jesus knew what he was going to do.

C.  Trust Jesus.

The sign in the window read: “Boy Wanted”. Young John Simmons, though he was lazy, saw his opportunity and applied. He was quickly hired by elderly Mr. Peters. The pace was leisurely so he enjoyed the job. Toward the middle of the afternoon however, he was sent up to the attic — a dingy place full of cobwebs and infested with mice. “You will find a long, deep box there,” explained Mr. Peters. “Please sort out the contents and see what should be saved.”

John was disappointed. It was a large container, and there seemed to be nothing in it but old junk. After a few minutes he went back to the ground floor. Asked by the proprietor if he had completed his work, he replied, “No, sir, it was dark and cold up there and I didn’t think it was worth doing.” At closing time he was paid and told not to return.

The next morning the old sign “Boy Wanted” appeared in its usual place. Crawford Hill was the next to be employed. When he was asked to tidy up the same box, however, he spent hours separating the usable nails and screws from the things to be discarded. Suddenly he raced down the stairs all excited. “At the very bottom I found this!” he exclaimed, holding up a 20-dollar bill. At last the store owner had discovered a conscientious boy to whom he could entrust his business when he retired.

Years later Mr. Peters said, “This young man, who is now my successor, found his fortune in a junk box!” Then, correcting himself, he added, “No, he actually found it in his mother’s Bible because he heeded the verse she made him memorize: ‘He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much!’”

Ed Wood, Sermon Central, June 29, 2005.

“Jonathan said to his young armor-bearer, “Come, let’s go over to the outpost of those uncircumcised men. Perhaps the Lord will act in our behalf. Nothing can hinder the Lord from saving, whether by many or by few.””

‭‭ 1 Samuel‬ ‭14‬:‭6‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

II.  SOLUTION- God uses little things to make a big difference.

“Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). ‭‭ John‬ ‭6‬:‭10‬-‭13‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

A.  Have the people sit down.

1.  Prepare for the blessing before it arrives.

2.  Orderliness

B.  Bless what they had

1.  Five loaves

2.  Two fish

Little things are important.

It was Benjamin Franklin who wrote:

For want of a nail the shoe was lost;

for want of a shoe the horse was lost;

and for want of a horse the rider was lost;

being overtaken and slain by the enemy,

all for the want of care about a horseshoe nail.

Bruce Goettsche, "Little Things," 1/12/2009.

C.  Gather the leftovers

1.  12 basketful of bread

2.  What about the fish?

3.  Waist nothing.

D.  Jesus withdrew

1.  The crowd wanted him to be king.

2.  Jesus wanted to be their savior.

“After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.” Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.”

‭‭ John‬ ‭6‬:‭14‬-‭15‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

There is a deeper meaning for you an me.   There may not be a crowd of 5,000, but there is plenty to be done.

“Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.””

‭‭ 1 Corinthians‬ ‭1‬:‭26‬-‭31‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

When you look through the eyes of God, what does He want done?

III.  SYNOPSIS

A.  The apostles lacked God's vision.

B.  Jesus showed them what God can do and how to act when He does.

C.  We must do our part.

The capacity to create a compelling picture of the desired; state of affairs that inspires people to respond; that which is desirable, which could be, should be; that which is attainable. A godly vision is right for the times, right for the church, and right for the people. A godly vision promotes faith rather than fear. A godly vision motivates people to action. A godly vision requires risk-taking. A godly vision glorifies God, not people.

Bob Logan, 10,000 Sermon Illustrations.

“Nevertheless, each person should live as a believer in whatever situation the Lord has assigned to them, just as God has called them. This is the rule I lay down in all the churches.”

‭‭ 1 Corinthians‬ ‭7‬:‭17‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

CONCLUSION

We need to have God’s vision.  We must remember that God uses little things to make a big difference.  We have to be ready to do our part when God does His.

“Do little things as though they were great, because of the majesty of Jesus Christ who does them in us, and who lives our life; and do the greatest things as though they were little and easy, because of His omnipotence.”

Blaise Pascal

GOD USES LITTLE THINGS: The Still, Small Voice 10-6-24

GOD USES LITTLE THINGS: The Still, Small Voice 10-6-24

INTRODUCTION

Dust, stick, jawbone, 5 stones, handful of flour and some oil

No rain yet

“And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.” So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees. “Go and look toward the sea,” he told his servant. And he went up and looked. “There is nothing there,” he said. Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.” The seventh time the servant reported, “A cloud as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.” So Elijah said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’ ” Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain started falling and Ahab rode off to Jezreel. The power of the Lord came on Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt, he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.”

‭‭ 1 Kings‬ ‭18:41-46‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

“Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.” Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.” Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. There he went into a cave and spent the night. And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?” He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.” The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.” The Lord said to him, “Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram. Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet. Jehu will put to death any who escape the sword of Hazael, and Elisha will put to death any who escape the sword of Jehu. Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel—all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him.” So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him. Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah. “Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye,” he said, “and then I will come with you.” “Go back,” Elijah replied. “What have I done to you?” So Elisha left him and went back. He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He burned the plowing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow Elijah and became his servant.”

‭‭ 1 Kings‬ ‭19:1-21‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

I.  PROBLEM - We forget

“Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.” Elijah was afraid and ran for his life.”

‭‭1 Kings‬ ‭19‬:‭1‬-‭3a‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

A.  Memory

1.  God had provided food with ravens and a starving woman

2.  God had overcome Baal and 450 prophets

3.  Forgot what God had done

I was relieved recently to find out that I’m not the only one who forgets things. According to researcher Karen Bolla, everyone does at one time or another.

These are the six things people most often forget:

• (6). faces 42%

• (5). what was said 49%

• (4). words 53%

• (3). telephone numbers 57%

• (2). where something is 60%

• (1). names 83%

And if you can’t remember whether you’ve just done something, you join 38 percent of the population.

Gordon Curley, Sermon Central, November 18, 2010.

“Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?””

‭‭ 1 Kings‬ ‭19‬:‭3‬-‭9‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

Three sisters, ages ninety-two, ninety-four, and ninety-six, lived together. One night the ninety-six-year-old drew a bath. She put one foot in and then paused. “Was I getting in the tub or out?” she yelled.

The ninety-four-year-old hollered back, “I don’t know; I’ll come and see.” She started up the stairs but stopped on the first step, shouting, “Was I going up or coming down?”

The ninety-two-year-old was sitting at the kitchen table having tea, listening to her sisters. She shook her head and said, “I sure hope I never get that forgetful,” and knocked on wood for good measure. Then she yelled, “I’ll come up and help both of you as soon as I see who’s at the door.”

Kelvin McKisic, Sermon Central, June 26, 2023.

B.  Right now

“There he went into a cave and spent the night. And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?” He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.””

‭‭ 1 Kings‬ ‭19‬:‭9‬-‭10‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

1.  Scared

2.  Worried

3.  Unsure

4.  Faithless

“The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. Not many people enjoy going to the doctor, but according to Reuters, in 1994, one London accountant to that to an extreme. The 63-year-old man needed bladder surgery, but he couldn't overcome his fear of doctors and hospitals. So he self-reliantly did what had to be done. He tried to perform the surgery upon himself. Tragically he got an infection and died. The coroner said, "Unfortunately, his drastic remedy went wrong. A simple operation would have solved the problem."

Just as many don't trust doctors and hospitals, many people wont trust God. In their self-reliance, they destroy themselves.

John Putty, Sermon Central, March 19, 2011.

II.  SOLUTION - Have faith now

“The Lord said to him, “Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel—all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him.””

‭‭ 1 Kings‬ ‭19‬:‭15‬-‭18‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

“So Elijah went . . .”

‭‭ 1 Kings‬ ‭19‬:‭19‬a ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

A.  Listen

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”

‭‭John‬ ‭10‬:‭27‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

"Early one morning, I saw an extraordinary sight not far from Bethlehem. Two shepherds had evidently spent the night with their flocks in a cave. The sheep were all mixed together, and the time had come for the shepherds to go in different directions. One of the shepherds stood some distance from the sheep and began to call. First one, then another, then four or five animals ran towards him; and so on until he had counted his whole flock."

H. V. Morton, In the Steps of the Master, London 1935, pg. 155.

B.  Keep obeying

“You are my friends if you do what I command.”

‭‭John‬ ‭15‬:‭14‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

More than ninety people conducted an ALL-NIGHT SEARCH for an eight-year-old boy named Dominic. While on a skiing trip with his father, this little boy apparently had ridden a new lift and skied off the run without realizing it. They hoped to find Dominic somewhere on the snowy mountain slope before it was too late.

As each hour passed, the search party and the boy’s family became more and more concerned. By dawn they still had found no trace of him. Two helicopters joined the search, and within fifteen minutes had spotted ski tracks. A ground team followed the tracks which changed to small footprints. The footprints led to a tree where they found the boy at last.

“He’s in super shape,” Sgt. Terry Silbaugh, area search and rescue Coordinator, announced to the anxious family and press. "In fact, he’s in better shape than we are right now." A hospital spokesman said the boy was in fine condition and was not even admitted.

Silbaugh explained why the boy did so well despite spending a night in the freezing elements: His father had enough forethought to warn the boy what to do if he became lost, and his son had enough trust to do exactly what his father said.

Dominic protected himself from possible frostbite and hypothermia by snuggling up to a tree and covering himself with branches. As a young child he never would have thought of doing this on his own. He was simply obeying his wise and loving father.

God is not telling us to abide in the Son by abiding in His word for His good but for ours. The question is are we listening with the intent to obey?

“Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.”

‭‭ Matthew‬ ‭24‬:‭12‬-‭13‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

C.  Trust that God will provide

“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”

‭‭Philippians‬ ‭4‬:‭19‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

“So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭6‬:‭31‬-‭34‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

“And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”

‭‭ 2 Corinthians‬ ‭9‬:‭8‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.”

‭‭Psalm‬ ‭23‬:‭1‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

Charles Spurgeon writes:

"There is One who cares for you. His eye is fixed on you, His heart beats with pity for your woe, and His omnipotent hand shall bring you the needed help. The darkest cloud shall scatter itself in showers of mercy. He, if you are one of His family, will bind up your wounds and heal your broken heart. Do not doubt His grace because of your tribulation, but believe that He loves you as much in seasons of trouble as in times of happiness. If God cares for you, why do you need to care too? Can you trust Him for your soul and not your body? He has never refused to bear your burdens; He has never fainted under their weight. Come, then, soul! Say good-bye to anxiety and leave all your concerns in the hand of a gracious God."

III.  SYNOPSIS

A.  We must remember.

Michelle Johnson writes, “Sometimes we need to take a look at where we’ve been with God to really understand His faithfulness and love for us. She was staying with her son at the hospital following a serious surgery. On that particular morning, she was exhausted by their stay, and her steps were slow as she walked to the cafeteria for breakfast. But while waiting on the elevator, she realized she was on the 6th floor. The view out the window of the concrete roof held special significance. It was one she’d seen many times before because it was the same view for the six weeks she had seen after her car wreck. The doctors said she'd never walk normally, she'd have arthritis within a year, and she'd have to have a hip replacement within 5 years. None of that happened. Thirty-five years later, the memories of God’s faithfulness during those days moved her to tears.

And then she writes, “Do you need a reminder of His faithfulness today? Wouldn’t it be cool if we could sit down with some of the men and women in the Bible and talk about their memories of times with God?

- Wouldn’t it be awesome to hear Joseph’s rendition of the events that took him from a dreary prison cell to the palace?

- Or…from Daniel as he told how a faithful God kept him alive and unharmed during an entire night in a den of lions?

- What if Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego could show us the clothes they wore in the fiery furnace—without a burn or scorch mark on them, or even the aroma of smoke…?

Sometimes in the busyness of life, we forget to remember His faithfulness.

Do you need to look back and remember what He’s done for you? Do you need to share those memories with your children, grandchildren or others who need to hear them? I’m so grateful I can look back and remember where I’ve been with Him—and know that the God who was faithful in the past will also be faithful in the future.

Tim Smith, Sermon Central, August 13, 2017.

“Then I thought, “To this I will appeal: the years when the Most High stretched out his right hand. I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds.””

‭‭ Psalm‬ ‭77‬:‭10‬-‭12‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

B.  We must listen.

Before refrigerators, people used icehouses to preserve their food. Icehouses had thick walls, no windows, and a tightly fitted door. In winter, when streams and lakes were frozen, large blocks of ice were cut, hauled to the icehouses, and covered with sawdust. Often the ice would last well into the summer.

One man lost a valuable watch while working in an icehouse. He searched diligently for it, carefully raking through the sawdust, but didn’t find it. His fellow workers also looked, but their efforts, too, proved futile.

A small boy who heard about the fruitless search slipped into the icehouse during the noon hour and soon emerged with the watch.

Amazed, the men asked him how he found it.

"I closed the door," the boy replied, "lay down in the sawdust, and kept very still. Soon I heard the watch ticking."

Often the question is not whether God is speaking, but whether we are being still enough, and quiet enough, to hear.

Phillip Gunter, Fresh Illustrations for Preaching & Teaching (Baker Books), from the editors of Leadership Magazine.

C.  We must keep obeying.

D.  We must trust that God can provide.

CONCLUSION

“Be still, and in the quiet moments, listen to the voice of your heavenly Father. His words can renew your spirit. No one knows you and your needs like He does.”

Janet L. Weaver

We must listen for the still small voice of God.  We must keep obeying.  We must trust that God can provide.

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.”

‭‭ John‬ ‭10‬:‭27‬-‭28‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬
