INTRODUCTION

 

God is doing a new thing!

There has got to be more to this life!

The ontological question - What am I?  The inevitable question about God

The existential question - Who am I?  How should we exist?

 

Did you hear about the college student who was taking the course in ornithology, which is a study of birds?

 

This class in ornithology had the reputation of being the most difficult class in the whole curriculum. And the professor was an extremely difficult professor. Everybody feared him. But it was a required course, & every student had to take it.

 

As the course began, the professor announced there would be a test in 40 days & it would compose a large portion of the grade. So you had to do well on that test. Everybody studied. They took copious notes. They made sure they understood everything the professor said.

 

On the 40th day the students filed into the lecture hall with sweaty palms, extremely nervous. On the stage was a table with 5 cages on it. Each cage had a cover & beneath the cover they could see the feet & spindly legs of a bird.

 

At the sound of the bell, the professor addressed the students, “Here’s the test. You can see there are 5 birds & they’re all covered except for their feet & legs. You must tell me the identity of each of those 5 birds by looking only at their feet & legs.”

 

Everyone had studied long & hard, but no one had anticipated such a test. And they were all sweating, trying to remember something, anything, that could help them pass the test.

 

Finally, one student stood up & said, “This is ridiculous. This is the craziest test I have every seen, & you’re the worst professor in this whole school.” He said, “I quit. I‘m out of here. I’m not going to take this test.” And he turned & walked toward the door.

 

“Just a minute young man.” said the professor. “Who are you? I demand your name right now.” The young man stopped, took a long look at the professor, & then pulling up both of his pant legs said, “You tell me."

 

To know someone’s identity you have to know much more than what their feet and legs look like.

 

We are living in a generation where stolen identity is very common. This is where someone else uses your name, social security number and etc to make purchases and charges these to your account. This can happen from loosing your wallet or purse, or someone coming in contact with documents with this vital information listed on it. It becomes a major ordeal if your identity is stolen. It takes years or a lifetime to correct the damage that is done to your credit and character.

 

Yet our identities cannot really be stolen.  Just information about us.

 

I.  WHO ARE WE?

 

In The Mask Behind the Mask, biographer Peter Evans says that actor Peter Sellers played so many roles he sometimes was not sure of his own identity. Approached once by a fan who asked him, “Are you Peter Sellers?” Sellers answered briskly, “Not today,” and walked on.

         A.  Creations of God

 

“Then God said, “Let us make mankind”

“This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens. Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth and no plant had yet sprung up, for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground, but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.”

               B.  Image bearers of God

 

“Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”

       C.  Caretakers of God’s world

 

“God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.”

II.  WHOSE ARE WE?

 

If you’re in Lake City, Fla., one of these days and happen to run into a 50-something fellow with a sandy moustache, a receeding hairline, and aviator glasses, you may be in the presence of I Am Who I Am. Really.

 

But that’s because Columbia County Court turned down his first request for a new name: God. The former Charles Haffey says he wanted a new identity.

               A.  The creations of God

 

“Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever.                B.  The redeemed of Christ

               C.  The followers of Christ

 

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

               D.  The people of God

 

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.”

                             1 Peter 2:9-10 NIV

 

III.  WHO DOES GOD SAY WE ARE?

 

Back in the early 1980’s, a young man was found guilty of robbing a convenience store. He told the court that he had lost his job months before and had been unable to make enough money working at odd jobs to support his family and pay his bills. “I know it was wrong to rob the store,” he pleaded. “But my family’s was starving.” He was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

 

Three years later it was discovered that the man who was tried and sent to prison was not the one who robbed the store, after all. Instead, it was his identical twin who voluntarily took his brother’s place in court. When reporters asked why he went to prison for a crime that his brother committed he replied, “I don’t have a wife and kids. My brother does, and they needed him.” He then added, “I will be glad to serve the rest of his time, if they let me.”

 

We are not, in fact, the final arbiter of who we are.  What God says about our identity is critical.

 

The movie Overcomer proclaimed through the voice of the main character, Hannah, how God sees us.

In Ephesians 1 and 2, God says we are . . . 

            A.  Blessed

             B.  Chosen

           C.  Adopted

      D.  Redeemed

           E.  Forgiven

               F.  Sealed

               G.  Loved

               H.  Saved

 

Read Ephesians 1 and 2 this week and discover who you are in God’s view.

 

John Stott said, “When the Christian loses himself, he finds himself, he discovers his true identity.”

INTRODUCTION

 

God is doing a new thing?

There is more to this life!  We are given life to the full.  Are you living a full life?

This is series is going to look at our lives and ask some questions about what we are doing here in this life.

 

In this series, we will spend time looking at identity, integrity, and intentionality.  With each progressive step we will get closer to living the full life God intended for you and for me.

 

Identity is much more than our careers, preferences, families, and personal stories.

 

Recent research by researcher, Emergence, found the following three the most recognized brand identity tags: “You’re in good hands” (Allstate Insurance), “Like a good neighbor” (State Farm Insurance) and “Always low prices, Always” (Wal-Mart).

When Christian Herter was governor of Massachusetts, he was running hard for a second term in office. One day, after a busy morning chasing votes (and no lunch) he arrived at a church barbecue. It was late afternoon and Herter was famished. As the Governor moved down the serving line, he held out his plate to the woman serving chicken. She put a piece on his plate and turned to the next person in line.

 

“Excuse me,” Governor Herter said, “do you mind if I have another piece of chicken?”

 

“Sorry,” the woman told him. “I’m supposed to give one piece of chicken to each person.”

 

“But I’m starved,” the governor said.

 

“Sorry,” the woman said again. “Only one to a customer.”

 

Governor Herter was a modest and unassuming man, but he decided that this time he would throw a little weight around. “Do you know who I am?” he said. “I am the Governor of this state.”

 

“Do you know who I am?” the woman said.

 

“No I don’t know who you are,” he said.

 

“Well, I’m the lady in charge of the chicken and it’s one piece of chicken per customer. Now move on down the line.”

A famous preacher visited a Nursing home that had some patients with Alzheimer's in it. He went around and greeted the people who were very glad to see him. He walked up to one lady and asked, "Do you know who I am?" She said, "No, but if you go to the Front Desk, they can tell you."

 

I.  IDENTITY:WHAT IS IT?

 

Theorist Erik Erikson coined the term "identity crisis" and believed that it was one of the most important conflicts people face in development. According to Erikson, an identity crisis is a time of intensive analysis and exploration of different ways of looking at oneself. 

 

Psychology Today says, “Identity encompasses the memories, experiences, relationships, and values that create one’s sense of self. This amalgamation creates a steady sense of who one is over time, even as new facets are developed and incorporated into one's identity.

 

How is identity formed?  Identity formation involves three key tasks: Discovering and developing one’s potential, choosing one’s purpose in life, and finding opportunities to exercise that potential and purpose. Identity is also influenced by parents and peers during childhood and experimentation in adolescence.”

II.  IDENTITY: WHERE DOES IT COME FROM?

 

               A.  Fixed or fluid

                              1.  Birth

 

““Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.””

                              2.  Life

              B.  Nature v. Nurture

                              1.  Birth

                              2.  Life

 

Christians often times buy into the simplistic categories of “nature vs. nurture.” But if we want to be more biblical, we should recognize that there are more distinctions than this, based on creation, sin, and grace.

 

In an article from several years ago David Powlison has a helpful footnote where he suggests four categories:

1.       creation nature (our nature as the result of being created in God’s image)

2.       sin nature (our nature as a result of falling into sin)

3.       sin nurture (ways in which rebellion is modeled and encouraged)

4.       grace nurture (ways in which godly behavior is modeled and encouraged).

               C.  Divine or human

                              1.  Birth

III.  IDENTITY: WHO AM I?

 

In a case of mistaken identity, a Caledonia college student believed to have survived a bus crash on April 26th actually died in the accident, and a Gaylord woman presumed to be dead is in a Grand Rapids hospital being treated for head wounds.

 

The Taylor University student, Whitney E. Cerak, 18, recently came out of a coma at Spectrum Health’s Butterworth Campus, where parents of Laura J. VanRyn of Caledonia maintained a vigil since from the April 26 crash until the May 31st realization that the girl who they believed was their daughter was actually Whitney, not Laura.

You probably know Ted Giannoulas even if you’ve never heard his name. He has been the San Diego Chicken for 30 years. He originated the character as a college student, but Ted is getting older. At age 50, being the Chicken has been his life and his whole identity. His face is never photographed unless he is in costume. No one knows the real Ted. He has no family. At first, he loved his alter ego. "I discovered an untapped personality in that suit," he said. "It was like, now I have freedom. Now I’m no longer Ted." But there is a price to pay. Dave Raymond, who for years wore the costume of the Philly Phanatic, said, "[Giannoulas] was the first and the funniest, and I have nothing but respect for him. But if you’re not careful, you can lose yourself in that suit." Ted himself says, "I have plenty of Chicken stories. I’m afraid I don’t have any Ted stories."

               C.  If you could see someone else, who would it be?

 

Bob Dylan is considered one of the greatest song writers of all time.

 

In 1965 he wrote "Like a Rolling Stone" - one of his most popular songs. It has been acclaimed as the greatest lyric ever written. "Like a Rolling Stone" is statistically the most acclaimed song of all time. Rolling Stone Magazine listed it at No. 1 on their 2004 and 2010 "500 Greatest Songs of All Time"

 

The chorus ...

How does it feel, how does it feel?

To be on your own, with no direction home

               D.  You are exactly who God wants you to be!

Identity determines destiny!  Next week we will look more particularly about what the Bible says about our identity.
